This is not necessarily a bad thing, given the U.S. This was my first mistake.Īs I quickly learned upon my arrival in Barcelona, my perception of life in the “big city,” was one that was heavily influenced by the culture, commerce, and ideals of the United States.

That being said, once I decided to study abroad in Spain, I was eager to continue to immerse myself in what I knew to be the metropolitan ways of a prominent urban center. Additionally, I felt not just comfortable, but at home, with the cultural norms that I had grown up adhering to and partaking in.

Trends in fashion, online, or even home decor were easy to both navigate and appreciate. Through both social and traditional media, as well as my own personal experience, it was easy to keep my finger on the pulse of my surroundings. Living just outside of New York City for the entirety of my life, before coming to Europe, I considered myself fairly well versed on the ins and outs of modern metropolitan life.
